If you're a family looking for a scenic, budget-friendly outdoor adventure in Southwest Florida, Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda is a hidden gem worth exploring.

Nestled on the shores of Charlotte Harbor, this 10-acre waterfront park offers a little something for everyone—from sandy beaches and wildlife encounters to fishing, paddling, and breathtaking sunsets. Best of all? It’s free!

Whether you're local or visiting from out of town, this guide will show you exactly why Ponce de Leon Park is a must-visit destination for families with kids.

Park Hours and Location

Ponce de Leon Park is located at 3400 Ponce de Leon Parkway, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is completely free.

To get there, head west from downtown Punta Gorda along Marion Avenue. Keep driving past Fishermen’s Village, and you’ll reach the park’s entrance at the very end of the road.

While the park is pet-friendly to service animals only, it’s a haven for children and adults alike who want to soak up the Florida sun or enjoy nature by the water.

Things to Do at Ponce de Leon Park in Punta Gorda

1. Relax on the Beach

Ponce de Leon Park features a small but beautiful man-made beach, perfect for laying out a towel and soaking in the views of Charlotte Harbor. While it’s not ideal for swimming, it’s a wonderful spot for kids to play in the sand and parents to unwind.

2. Catch a Fish or Watch Boats Drift By

Fishing enthusiasts will love the fishing pier (note: the observation deck pier is temporarily closed). Kids can get in on the action, too, as they wait patiently for the next big bite or simply enjoy watching boats pass by in the distance.

3. Explore the Peace River Wildlife Center

One of the most unique and educational parts of the park is the Peace River Wildlife Center (PRWC), located right on-site. This non-profit organization rehabilitates over 2,000 injured or orphaned wild animals every year. The best part? Families can visit with permanent resident animals who can’t be released back into the wild.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily (except holidays)Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

You’ll see owls, hawks, pelicans, turtles, and more—all while learning about Florida’s native wildlife in a way that’s fun and accessible for kids.

4. Playground Time

The playground area at the park is perfect for letting younger kids burn off some energy. With shaded benches nearby, parents can relax while keeping an eye on their little adventurers.

5. Picnic by the Water

Families can enjoy lunch in the open-air picnic pavilion or spread out on one of the picnic tables near the shore. With restrooms nearby, it’s an easy spot to plan a whole afternoon outing.

6. Stroll Through Nature

There’s a peaceful ¼-mile mangrove boardwalk trail that winds through natural wetlands. It's a great way to introduce kids to the beauty of Florida’s unique ecosystems. (Note: The boardwalk is currently closed for maintenance—check ahead before your visit.)

7. Launch a Kayak or Paddleboard

For families with older kids or teens, the park has a boat ramp that gives access to Charlotte Harbor and Little Alligator Creek. It’s a favorite launch spot for kayaking and paddleboarding through scenic mangroves.

Nature & Wildlife Sightings

The park is home to a variety of wildlife including:

  • Ospreys

  • Herons and ibises

  • Mangrove crabs

  • Dolphins and the occasional manatee

Even if you’re not visiting the PRWC, the natural surroundings provide lots of opportunity for spontaneous wildlife spotting—a treat for curious kids.

A Bit of History

The park pays tribute to Juan Ponce de León, who is believed to have explored the area in 1513 in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. Around Punta Gorda, you’ll find several monuments and artistic tributes to the Spanish explorer, making this park not just a fun stop—but an educational one, too.

I also got my cranberry hibiscus at Echo in Ft. Myers over 13 years ago and I love that they still pop up in my yard. I've been trying to find the exact macros this plant provides to your diet but all I ever come up with is info on either the tea or the flowers. I use the leaves in my salads daily when its growing fresh in my yard. I do prefer the smaller leaves for salad. Any additional info you may have is appreciated!
