If you’re looking for a true taste of “wild Florida,” look no further than Myakka River State Park. Stretching across more than 37,000 acres, this Sarasota County gem is one of the oldest and largest state parks in the Sunshine State.

From prairies and wetlands to oak hammocks and rivers teeming with wildlife, Myakka offers a little bit of everything that makes Florida so unique.

Whether you’re a hiker chasing solitude, a birdwatcher with binoculars in hand, or a family looking for a fun day outdoors, this park delivers unforgettable experiences year-round.

A Brief History of Myakka River State Park

Myakka River State Park’s story begins in the early 1900s, when Chicago socialite and cattle rancher Bertha Palmer owned much of the land in Sarasota.

Later, in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) transformed the area into a state park. They built rustic palm-log cabins, roads, and bridges that are still in use today.

In 1941, Myakka officially opened to the public, becoming one of Florida’s first state parks. Fast forward to 1985, and the Florida Legislature designated 34 miles of the Myakka River as a Wild and Scenic River—a title that ensures its preservation and special protection.

Today, the park stands as a living museum of Florida’s natural heritage and human history, offering visitors the chance to step back in time while immersing themselves in nature.

Ecosystems & Wildlife

What makes Myakka so special is its incredible ecological diversity. Within minutes, you can walk from a sun-soaked dry prairie into a shady oak hammock, or from pine flatwoods into wetlands dotted with wading birds.

  • Habitats you’ll see: dry prairies, pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, cypress domes, freshwater marshes, and floodplain forests.

  • Wildlife: Expect to spot alligators basking on the riverbanks, roseate spoonbills swooping low over wetlands, ospreys fishing in the lakes, and even gopher tortoises slowly making their way across sandy trails. We personally saw gators, turtles, wild turkeys, deers and even a red shoulder hawk, so bring your binoculars and keep your eyes out.

One of the park’s most jaw-dropping features is the Deep Hole, a 135-foot sinkhole located in the Wilderness Preserve. Known for attracting dozens (sometimes hundreds) of alligators, it’s a spectacle that wildlife enthusiasts won’t want to miss.

Entry requires a special daily permit and they only give out 30 permits per day so you have to get there before 8 am when it opens to get a pass.

I would not recommend doing this trail if you have kids because it's a little over 2 miles to get there and another 2 miles to return and there are way too many gators in this area of the park.

Things to Do in Myakka River State Park

There’s no shortage of adventures waiting at Myakka. Here are the highlights:

2. The Famous Canopy Walkway

  • Flat-bottomed boat tours also run regularly, offering a relaxing way to spot birds and alligators.

4. Wildlife Viewing & Birding

  • The Birdwalk boardwalk is a prime spot for watching herons, egrets, wood storks, and spoonbills.

  • Myakka is considered a birding hotspot along the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

5. Camping & Cabins

  • Choose from developed campgrounds, rustic CCC-built log cabins, or six primitive backcountry campgrounds (Bee Island, Panther Point, Oak Grove, and more).

  • Cabins and campsites should be reserved in advance, especially during peak winter months.

We camped with our RV for three days at Myakka River State Park and we highly recommend it.

The bath house and toilets are clean, there is water and electric hook ups and it's pretty peaceful especially if you consider that there is no cell service in the area. I can't believe we went three full days without cell or internet service. So, if you want to disconnect this is the place for you.

Here's a tip if you have kids and want to do a movie night while staying at Myakka; If you have an Amazon Prime Subscription, Youtube Premium or another streaming service that allows you to download movies to watch them offline, get to downloading your favorites now and thank me later.

6. Biking & Scenic Drives

I also got my cranberry hibiscus at Echo in Ft. Myers over 13 years ago and I love that they still pop up in my yard. I've been trying to find the exact macros this plant provides to your diet but all I ever come up with is info on either the tea or the flowers. I use the leaves in my salads daily when its growing fresh in my yard. I do prefer the smaller leaves for salad. Any additional info you may have is appreciated!
