50 years and counting of sesame street

One of my middle child's first words was "Elmo" and my third child couldn't stop smiling the first time she saw Elmo on tv. I don't know what it is between this red, funny looking character and children, but they absolutely love it!

And as you can tell Sesame Street is a big part of my family's life. I love it as a parent because beyond being fun to watch, the show is also educational.

Now, believe it or not, Sesame street has been on the big screens for 50 big years! Everything started with Joan Ganz Cooney, a former documentary producer for public television whose goal was to create a television show that was captivating and educational but also prepared less fortunate children for pre-k and kindergarten.

After much research, funding and development, the show aired on television on November 10th of 1969 and became the most widely watched children's programming in the world, having aired in 120 different countries.

Today, even after 50 years, Sesame street continues to be a hit with children and even adults. The Sea World in Orlando, Florida has re created sesame street itself, featuring award winning parades and attractions and the amount of sesame street merchandise available in the market is pretty staggering.

If you are a Sesame street fanatic or just enjoy some of the characters, check out below some of the interesting things you can find online and in stores.
