The park also has several picnic areas with pavilions, grills, and tables, making it an ideal spot for a family picnic.

We prepared hot dogs, burgers, brought a cooler with refreshments and chose a picnic table with grill that was near the playground, so we could eat and relax while the kids played.

9. Geo-seeking

Geocaching is an exciting outdoor activity where participants use GPS technology to locate hidden containers, often referred to as caches, placed in specific locations.

How It Works

  • Someone places a cache in a designated spot and shares its GPS coordinates online.

  • Using a GPS device or a smartphone app, adventurers navigate to the location.

  • Upon finding the cache, participants may take an item from it.

  • In return, they leave an item of equal or greater value.

  • Participants document their experience in a logbook found inside the cache.

Why Try It?

  • Discover new and interesting places.

  • Have fun while learning how to use GPS technology.

  • Enjoy an outdoor activity that benefits both physical and mental well-being.

How to Get Started

  1. Download a geocaching app to locate nearby caches.

  2. Explore existing caches to understand what makes a good hiding spot.

  3. Review official guidelines before hiding your own cache.

  4. Obtain permission if placing a cache on private property.

  5. Use a durable, weather-resistant container to protect the cache’s contents.

10. Kids Playground

The park has two children's playgrounds, one is located in the riverside picnic area and the other in the pool picnic area.

11. Events & Weddings

Hillsborough River State Park is also a great location for events and weddings.

There was a large group of people having an event during our visit and it looked like it was a family reunion and they were having a great time. There are grills, pavilions, restrooms, and a whole lot to do which makes this park perfect for a gathering.

12. Suspension Bridge

There are only 12 suspension bridges in the state of Florida and the Hillsborough River State Park is home to one of them.

Built in the 1930's and rebuilt in the 50's, the parks bridge provides amazing views of the river and it's a great spot for photos. You can get there by taking a short hike down the Barnyard Trail, about 1.1 miles, or the River Rapids Trail, which is about a 1.2 miles hike.

Both hikes are considered easy, we'e done it with our kids who range in ages from 3 to 14 ( at the time of the hike) and they had a great time.

13. Explore Fort Foster Historic Site

Located on the east side of the park, Fort Foster was originally built during the Second Seminole War, it served as a defensive outpost to protect the bridge crossing over the Hillsborough River.

It also functioned as a critical supply depot for soldiers operating in the area.

Today, visitors can witness reenactments and living-history demonstrations that bring the fort’s past to life. The site hosts two major annual events: Fort Foster Rendezvous in January and The Candlelight Experience at Fort Foster in December, offering unique opportunities to step back in time and experience frontier life.

Hillsborough River State Park is the perfect blend of adventure, history, and relaxation. Whether you're paddling through the river, hiking among towering cypress trees, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, this park has something magical to offer.

I also got my cranberry hibiscus at Echo in Ft. Myers over 13 years ago and I love that they still pop up in my yard. I've been trying to find the exact macros this plant provides to your diet but all I ever come up with is info on either the tea or the flowers. I use the leaves in my salads daily when its growing fresh in my yard. I do prefer the smaller leaves for salad. Any additional info you may have is appreciated!
