Recently, a great friend of mine asked me to recommend some essential oils for psoriasis because she has been struggling with the disease and nothing really has seem to be working anymore.
To be frank with you, I wasn't very familiar with psoriasis so I had to go do some digging myself in order to point my friend in the right direction.
Psoriasis: What is it ?
Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by patches of red, scaly skin that may itch or burn. It typically involves scalp, elbow, knees, hands and feet but other areas can be affected as well.
Although it is said by the general medicine that the cause of psoriasis is unclear, after doing some research I found out many doctors have stated and agreed that the lead cause of psoriasis is due to a condition called leaky gut.
One interesting fact that may prove that the condition is in fact caused by an issue generated in the gut is that inflammatory bowel movement is 3 to 7 times greater in psoriasis patients compared to the general population.
Now, one thing everyone agrees on is that the disease is genetic so while it cannot be cured, it can certainly be treated by lowering the factors that trigger a flare.
Factors that trigger psoriasis
Controlling the condition and knowing what aggravates it can help you make better choices that will lead to a decrease in symptoms.
There are several factors that can trigger a flare of psoriasis, here are a few of them:
Poor diet
Infection
Stress
Certain drugs such as blood pressure medications and oral steroids
Trauma
How to naturally control your psoriasis
Considering psoriasis is a condition that starts in the gut here are three main steps to take in order to maintain the disease under control.
#1 - Feed your body the right foods
Diet is key when dealing with psoriasis because the main issue lies within the digestive system and its gut lining, it is extremely important that you feed your body the food it needs to build a healthy skin and to also protect you gut lining.
Many psoriasis patients swear by the paleo and/or keto diet, which are high in fat and protein, and claim to have seen major results after starting the regimen.
Here are some foods to include in your diet
Poly and monounsaturated fats - helps build better and stronger skin.
Ex: coconut oil, almond butter, butter (not margarine), olive oil
Probiotic Rich Foods - Helps support good bacteria needed for a healthy gut
Ex: Goat milk yogurt, Goats milk, Kefir
Fiber - Helps your body digest foods better
Ex: Berries, cruciferous veggies like cauliflower, leafy greens, chia seeds, flax seeds
Protein - Needed to rebuild healthy skin
Ex: Organic grass fed beef, eggs
Omega 3 - Helps with rebuilding of the skin
Ex: Wild caught fishes such as tuna, mackerel, arctic char, sardines
Chicken broth - High in collagen, detrimental for skin slaticity and health
Herbs - Great to reduce gut inflammation
Ex: Dandelion, turmeric
# 2 - Get rid of the toxins
Think of your liver as the filtration system of your body. The more toxins you put into your body the more your liver has to work to filter it and stop those same toxins from going into the rest of your body.
Now, if you have a leaky gut syndrome it means that your liver is so saturated and there isn't enough good bacteria to rebuild that wall to stop those toxins from escaping and being released into the blood stream and sometimes even reaching the brain.
With that in mind, when the liver can't do its job properly, the body finds a different way of releasing the toxins and you guessed it right, it's through the skin.
Toxins could be anything your body rejects and it is a threat to your immune system, that can be cigarettes, drinking, foods that damage the gut lining such as conventional meat products, hydrogenated oils and most importantly, sugar.
I would also like to add some other ones that no one else mentioned but I believe it may be worth avoiding which are perfumes, body lotions and even sun block.
Majority of these products contain ingredients that are very toxic to the body. Take perfume for example, the amount of fragrance that needs to be used to make your most delicious perfume smell the way it does is highly toxic not only to your skin but also to your respiratory system.
So, be sure that you are not only detoxifying but also staying away from products and substances that are toxic to your body.
# 3 - Supplements & Vitamins
Taking vitamins and supplements will help in the creation of the right biochemical process your body needs for healthy gut and skin.
Here are some supplements to consider and to ask your doctor if they are right for you.
Probiotics - Helps increase beneficial bacteria growth in the gut. Be sure to buy a high quality product. You may want to ask your doctor what would be the best strain for you and amount to take daily.
Hydrochloric Acids containing HCL with pepsin - It helps break down proteins and since part of what causes psoriasis is poor protein digestion this supplement is great for anyone experiencing a break out after consuming protein. ONLY to be taken when protein is consumed!
Fish Oil with EPA-DHA - It supports the body in fighting infection. The recommendation dose is 1000 mg per day, however, consult your doctor for a more precise and customized dosage.
Milk Thistle - It helps detoxify the liver. Can be taken in tea form or supplement.
Digestive Enzymes - Promotes healthy digestion by helping the body break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Can be taken in supplement form or by eating foods with natural enzymes such as pineapple, papaya and many others.
Vitamin D - Vitamin D is the key supplement to take when treating psoriasis. It helps regulate both the immune and neuromuscular systems. It is so detrimental to humans that the body has the capability to make it on its own when exposed to enough sun light. Can be taken in supplement form, by eating foods rich in vitamin D or having a sufficient amount of sun light exposure regularly.
Essential Oils for Psoriasis
Essential oils are a great way of getting your psoriasis under control. Oils contain many great properties that helps the body fight diseases and infections such as anti bacterial, anti oxidant, anti viral and many other properties.
Now, considering psoriasis is a skin condition that starts in the gut, the best oils to help in the treatment are the oils that are effective in detoxifying the liver, helping to maintain a healthy gut as well as skin regeneration.

I also got my cranberry hibiscus at Echo in Ft. Myers over 13 years ago and I love that they still pop up in my yard. I've been trying to find the exact macros this plant provides to your diet but all I ever come up with is info on either the tea or the flowers. I use the leaves in my salads daily when its growing fresh in my yard. I do prefer the smaller leaves for salad. Any additional info you may have is appreciated!
